Worm Composting Resources

Composting with red wigglers at your home or your backyard, or even under the kitchen sink in your small urban apartment is a great way to decrease your impact on the environment. On the plus side you also get the best plant supplement not even money can buy. Ok it is a bit of an exaggeration because you can actually buy worm compost from various sources. But the point stands: Worm castings are organic and nutritious plant supplements.

But is it easy to start a worm bin? Does that require any special skills? Will my worm bin smell? Can I leave my worms unattended for a week? Yeah, you have questions. But do not worry. Not only worm composting is easier than you think also a great online community of worm composters are here to answer any and all questions you have. When I started my first red wiggler bin I knew very little. In time I learned even the minute details about tending your worms through various online sources. But I had to look. Even though I ended up with a very good network it was not as easy as it is today. So in order to encourage novice vermiculturalists, in other words raiser and harvester of worms and worm castings, I try to make worm composting as visible as possible on the internet. I truly think some accelerated composting method can have a measurable and positive impact on our cities.

So this post is all about giving you a couple of tips about where to look and where to start. So here are a few websites you can visit as first order of business.

Worm Composting - Greenlife This is a relatively cleanly designed blog/website that publishes articles and shares videos on vermicomposting. From the silliest video on worm composting to academic articles on vermiculture, you can find it here. I visit it regularly and there usually is a new gem to enjoy.

Worm Composting Blog This is a sister blog sharing my enthusiasm for worms and worm composting. The site has started recently and content is a bit sparse but the author(s) seem to be eager to extend it in the future. Just add this blog to your bookmarks and wait for new updates.

Decomposing human waste using red worms

What can you compost with worms? Well worms are quite resilient. It turns out they can be used to compost human waste albeit not as efficiently as they devour horse manure. Several towns in California are using worms to rehabilitate their sewage. A masters student in US tries to apply the same idea at his own backyard as part of his thesis. Worm Composting Tutorial

Greenlife just published two short reviews of an introductory article on worm composting. Every year worm composting is becoming better known among main stream urban dwellers. This makes worm composting the perfect candidate for web articles to draw an audience. Some of such articles are just recycled old texts with some make-up splashed over. Composting using red wigglers is in fact not very difficult and there is no need to demand scholarly standards on blog posts and informational articles on gardening and environment web sites. Still Greenlife review puts these articles into perspective.
